Fe K-XANES: Fe K-XANES Measurements on Both Attic Sherds and Their Modern Reproductions
The Fe K-XANES project aimed to enhance the scientific understanding of ancient Attic pottery by comparing original sherds with their modern reproductions. Utilizing advanced synchrotron radiation techniques, the study provided valuable insights into the chemical composition and production methods of ancient ceramics. The collaboration brought together leading research institutions and technological expertise in the field of archaeological science.
The partnership included Technical Universität Berlin (Germany), THETIS Authentics Ltd (Greece), and INP, NCSR Demokritos (Greece). The project leveraged the capabilities of the BESSYII accelerator in Berlin to conduct high-precision Fe K-edge XANES measurements, furthering the understanding of ancient ceramic technology.
Project Objectives:
The primary objective was to analyze the iron oxidation states and their role in the coloration of Attic pottery, bridging the gap between ancient craftsmanship and modern material science.
Project Period: 2009-2010
Funded by: Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (Germany)
